This jacket kicks butt!! It is 4 degrees F out with strong winds and I was toasty with a expedition weight base layer and this jacket. For the money it is an incredible bargain. There is a great deal of attention to details, e.g., articulated sleeves, elbows with a rugged layer over bottom of forearms and elbow, the cuffs have large grips for tightening and loosening, there are attachment loops for gloves, the hood is totally awesome enabling a very snug fit and fully closed up protects your neck and face up to nose...the pockets are positioned wisely assuming one would be carrying a pack and still be able to have access, and there is a pocket for iphone etc. ...and when you zip the jacket up, it also has velcro strips that will hold the jacket together should you want to unzip and get some ventilation. It is definitely windproof and the lambswool like stuff on the inside is awesomely comfortable and warm....I am 6'1" and weigh around 180 and the X Large fits me perfectly. To get a jacket with this degree of warmth, even if it gets wet (!!!!!) and number of quality features for serious mountaineering, for under $200 is freaking unbelievable....I hesitated to buy it trying a couple other down jackets first that were disappointing...I am a very very happy camper and would strongly recommend you give Montane a shot if you are looking to keep warm on the trail!I have been using Buffalo products for 30 years and each have their +&- points. As for the Montane it has velcro tabs on the wrists but also elastic cuffs. Buffalo only has velcro which means the cuff can be open providing ventilation when hot. The elastic cuffs on the Montane prevent this venting. The under arm and chest area has no fibre pile as they claim it restricts movement. In 30 years of wearing Buffalo I have never found it a problem. It creates a colder area on the jacket. However the hood is better than the Buffalo one with it's wired peak and easier fit.I also like the reinforced parts on the Montane sleeves.Overall I would say the Buffalo is easier to vent and slightly warmer but at a much higher price. Both great products.Have always ordered EL from Montane. This time a large might have been better. Good fit but a tad long in the arm. All positive reviews of the product were accurate. A very comfortable coat, too warm for summer but on a cold winters day the best jacket I have owned. The hood is exceptional for fit and warmth. Movement is not restricted when reaching up, length is good for a jacket of this style. As usual a not silly expensive but good quality product from Montane.Best bit of outdoor kit I have owned. This is my second one, the first having finally worn out after eight years of hard use on mountain and canoe expeditions. I have worn this on trips around Scotland with just a baselayer underneath in rain, snow and freezing conditions staying perfectly warm and comfortable. It is not waterproof but only in torrential rain did I feel the need to put on a waterproof shell. Even if you did get wet through for some reason the jacket still keeps you warm and drys very quickly. It is an active jacket which means that on cold evenings around camp I put on something over the top like a Rab Generator jacket.Great waterproof jacket. Not a big name but a fantastic purchase nonetheless. I've bought them all over the years and this is real value for money. Extremely waterproof and warm, nice mini fishtail detail at the back to keep the backside warm is a nice touch. Zips are huge and the pockets are great.Received the item in good time though the first one was too large, (I'm athletic with a large chest so the sizing is a little off) however, the sellers refunded my purchase immediately with local fuss, top marks for that.Re_ordered the jacket in a smaller size (large), and I'm astonished at just how good it is, it's lighter than I thought it would be but unbelievablely warm without being too much, ice worn this on very chilly mornings (0 c) with a solid windchill wearing nothing but a t shirt under and I've been properly warm not just "ok" but actually warm, it takes a few minutes to warm up, but when it does it's just outstanding, I run cold and I've spent years trying to find a coat I could go through winter with without having to resort to wearing 3/4 layers, (down is all it useless in the wet), I can highly recommend this jacket, with a woolen sweater underneath you could easily stay warm to - 10 c or lower,.... Utterly brilliant!
